The
Mother of Jesus Was ThereQuentin Hakenewerth, SM 49 pp. $2.00 Click on Image to Order The mutuality of the espousal of the Holy Spirit and Mary is seen in this: at the very time Jesus was conceived in her body, he was also conceived in her soul—Both actions of the Holy Spirit in Mary. That means that while Mary was forming the humanity of Christ in her womb, the Holy Spirit was forming all the traits of Jesus in her person. Every act of God’s love Mary is echoed in a response of her faith, and each act of Mary’s fidelity to God is confirmed by a new grace of union with the Holy Spirit. Exercises: In God’s selection
of Mary as the spouse of the Holy Spirit, we see utter gratuity combined
with the munificence of infinite mercy—an exclusive act of the Lord who
distributes his gifts as he pleases. But fidelity is not so completely the
work of grace as to exclude the cooperation of Mary with the Spirit of God
who dwells with her. Now it is precisely in this cooperation that Mary’s
greatest glory consists.
