In honor of the anniversary of Blessed Chaminade’s birthday (April 8, 1761), we offer excerpts from letters of Chaminade to two of his disciples, Brother Clouzet and Father Leo Meyer, dated November 3 and 4, 1836, respectively. On this day, we remember with gratitude the life of a man who dedicated himself to serving God and God’s people, and in so doing has touched countless lives for more than 200 years. We give thanks to God for Chaminade’s life and for the charism God chose to share with the Church through him. ![]() In Mary’s Magnificat we are reminded that as Christians we are
called to stand with poor and marginalized, just as Mary courageously stood at the foot of
the cross as her son was being crucified. During Lent we invite you to reflect on
Mary’s inspirational words as we remember those who are less fortunate in our world.
“This prayer recalls the hour when Jesus, on Calvary, gave
Mary as Mother to His beloved disciple and asked him to take her into his home. Traditionally this prayer
reminds Marianists of the mystery of the spiritual maternity of Mary and the invitation addressed to
all of us to live as a child of Mary and to take her into our hearts.” (FMI Rule of Life (1984), II.3)
And as the SM Rule of Life reminds us, the Three O’Clock Prayer is the “spiritual reunion of all
Marianists” (SM Rule of Life (2007), 4.7).
On February 2, 1801, Father Chaminade gave birth to the Sodality: his vision for the spiritual
regeneration of France in the wake of the French Revolution. On this day the first lay Marianists
committed to incarnating Father Chaminade’s vision. The Sodality would be the seedbed for the Society
of Mary and the Daughters of Mary. This was the genesis point of the entire Marianist Family. In 1824,
Chaminade wrote a letter to the pastors of Bordeaux defending the Sodality, its means and ends.
This is an excerpt from an interview with Brother Tom Giardino, SM, in
which he discusses his own introduction to Father Ferree, and how his
love of Marianist Studies grew during his years in the novitiate.
In this clip, Brother Tom Giardino, SM, talks about
Ferrees interest in charts (which can be found in A Ferree Resource
Collection,) and he discusses the idea of "Degrees of Consecration," one
of the central concepts of Ferree's interpretation of Marianist life. ![]()
