Describing the purpose of the Conversation Group, Bro. Lawrence J. Cada, SM, the
founder, used the image of a person walking through the night with a lantern, curious
about the path ahead. If this Marianist venture is to continue, we should do more than
stumble into the futures darkness: we should use the resources we have to help each
other see, as clearly as possible, the most important issues and questions facing the
Marianist world.
We can conduct ongoing conversations around these topics. Members can use written
exchanges, occasional gatherings, and informal communication to keep one another and the
NACMS Team abreast of reading and thinking which illuminate our Marianist journey into the
future. Members also assist the NACMS Team with designing and offering programs.
Since our beginning in 1988, the Conversation Group has met every six months. Often a
topic has continued for two or three meetings. Areas around which conversations have been
conducted include
- culture (in general, and United States culture in particular) and how traditional
Marianist characteristics are either impeded by or embodied within the dominant culture
- emergence of Marianist lay communities and factors that have shaped them into the
entities they have become today
- how we might turn to Mary and her Magnificat to give momentum to our
compassion and works of justice.
Our meetings in 2002 and 2003,
focused on discussions around the theme
"I Will Make All Things New." We identified tradition programs and unique
initiatives which have provided examples of reforming, renewing, or refounding efforts
among religious and lay Marianists. The most recent
meeting was in October 2005 and centered around stability in Marianist
spirituality.
