Intern Job Description

The internship is designed to deepen and broaden an individual’s knowledge of Marianist Studies and experience of the comprehensive Marianist Family. The usual term for the internship is one year. However, if both the supervisor and the intern determine that a second year would be advantageous, the internship can be extended for another 12 months. Depending on the office site available, he or she will report to the Director or one of the Associate Directors.

The intern will be expected to work with the supervisor to schedule and work toward the following

    1. Complete a set of core readings—a list of texts will be provided at the onset of the internship

    2. Become familiar with the history and significance of key persons in Marianist history. These can include the founders and “second founder,” martyrs, pioneers, and important thinkers such as William Ferree. Supervisors and interns will design a focus on certain individuals as the internship progresses.
    3. Develop a working knowledge of the Marianist Family across the globe—its cultures, divisions, collaborative structures, leaders, and ministries.

    4. Design and complete a Contributing Project which will advance one or more aspects of t he NACMS Mandate. Options and appropriate activities will be discussed by supervisor and intern after the intern has been working for three months.

    5. Along with program staff, participate in the design and implementation of NACMS educational or formational events.

    6. In consultation with Coordinator of Publications, contribute at least one piece of writing for publication (web or print).

    7. As requested by Director, attend meetings held by NACMS.

    8. As budget and schedules allow, accompany staff to primary centers of Marianist life throughout U.S. and Canada.

    9. If at-distance from NACMS-Dayton, design methods of communication to insure regular dialogue with staff.

    10. Assist staff with special projects, as needed. Before the conclusion of the year, submit a 10-page research paper on a Marianist topic (chosen in consultation with supervisor).

Typical vehicles for accomplishing the above include, but are not limited to tutorials, VLC classes, participation in yearly history class for novices, regular checks of main Marianist web sites, blogs, and directed reading.
