However, to create a single resource for catalogers of Marianist materials, all headings deemed pertinent to the Society of Mary, the Daughters of Mary Immaculate and all groups of the Marianist Family were included in this list.
Click here for a downloadable PDF version of these subject headings.
Introduction
This list originated with the need to provide cataloging staffs at Marianist Libraries and libraries with Marianist Collections with guidelines for assigning subject headings to these library materials. It is meant to be used in conjunction with the Marianist Library Classification (Rev. ed., 2006).
These headings are based on the Library of Congress’s Subject Headings (LCSH) and, in several instances, replicate LCSH and its governing rules. However, to create a single resource for catalogers of Marianist materials, all headings deemed pertinent to the Society of Mary, the Daughters of Mary Immaculate and all groups of the Marianist Family were included in this list.
A compilation of free-floating subdivisions is also included here. Unless otherwise directed these subdivisions should be used after replacing the term(s) in square brackets ([ ]) with an appropriate topic/subject or name term. For example, [Corporate name] – [Geographical subdivision] – Marianist history – [dates] would become Marianists – United States – Marianist history – 20th century.
The founders of the Society of Mary (William Joseph Chaminade, Adèle de Trenquelléon, and Marie Thérèse Lamourous) have additional, specific subdivisions. The full variety of subheadings available for use of the founders is provided under Chaminade’s name as the pattern.
The subject headings are listed alphabetically, as in a thesaurus. Relationships between terms are sometimes represented using Broader Term (BT) for a more general concept, Narrower Term (NT) for more specific topics, and/or Related Term (RT) for similar, related topics. Additionally, Use For (UF) is used to list unauthorized forms of a topic. USE is applied to direct the user from an unauthorized form to the authorized form of a heading. Scope notes have been added in some instances to provide more information regarding the use of a term.
